Masked men shot dead a dog and tied up its owners during a terrifying robbery at a farmhouse. The gang were confronted by the animal when they entered the house on Woodlands Farm in Astley.

They then shot it in the head.

After the owners were tied up, the robbers searched the house for money.

During the raid on Thursday night, one of the robbers hit the man with a pickaxe handle.

Det Insp Steve Crimmins said: "Not only have they been in fear of their own lives, they have also lost their pet dog as a result of the actions of these individuals. "
