Investigators in Madison County found one dog dead and 40 others injured when they raided a suspected puppy mill.

Police say the dogs were kept in a remote area near Combs, with dozens living in cages in a small kennel. Officers say the pets were sick and malnourished.

No ones lives on the land where the dogs were kept. Investigators say they believe the dogs were only being checked about once per week.

In the raid Wednesday, officers say, they also found cats, chickens and ducks there without food or water. Police say they are searching for two people they suspect ran the puppy mill.
