more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Dog neglected, living in feces
Hillsboro, OR (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Oct 9, 2007
County: Washington

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Convicted
Case Images: 2 files available

Defendant/Suspect: Shannon Lee Shelton

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Hillsboro woman who kept a puppy locked in a crate because she said she couldn't deal with its "rambunctiousness," was arrested Tuesday on an accusation of second-degree animal neglect.

Shannon Lee Shelton, 30, was also accused of filing a false police report, said Lt. Michael Rouches, spokesman for the Hillsboro Police Department.

Rouches said Shelton took her dog, a six-month old female pit bull (named Lily), to the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter Oct. 9. There, she claimed she found the dog in Shute Park in Hillsboro. Rouches said Washington County Animal Control officials became suspicious because the dog was thin and had ammonia burns on its paws and legs.

Shelton admitted Tuesday that she kept the dog crated. She said the dog was more than she could handle so she ignored it.

Rouches said Shelton was cited and released without being jailed. He said the dog was housed at the Bonnie L. Hays shelter and was doing well.

Case Updates

A pit bull terrier mix that was neglected by its owner is now up for adoption.

Animal lovers got a chance to meet "Lily" Saturday afternoon at the PetSmart store in Beaverton.

The dog's former owner, Shannon Lee Shelton of Hillsboro, was convicted of animal neglect Thursday in Washington County.

She was sentenced to two years probation and 80 hours of community service. She also won't be able to possess a domestic animal for five years.

Lily was 20 pounds underweight (shown at right) when Washington County Animal Services Officer Tim Locke picked her up from Shelton at Shute Park in Hillsboro. Shelton initially claimed she had found the dog but later admitted it was hers, authorities said.

Lily was covered in urine, emaciated and had signs of irritation and burns on her feet, probably from standing in a crate in her own waste, according to officials at the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter.

After nearly six months of care at the shelter and in a temporary foster care home, Lily was deemed ready for a permanent home.
