Police arrested eight men at a West Side house Sunday after they discovered them participating in a cockfight in their backyard, according to a police report.

An officer who arrived at the house in the 3000 block of Chihuahua Street heard the roosters and saw one man hold up a dead rooster, which was covered in blood, the report said. When the men noticed the officer, they scattered and hid the dead rooster under a tarp. Nine other roosters, including two injured birds, were seized and turned over to animal control authorities.

Police also secured more than $8,000 in cash from the men, who were charged with cruelty to animals, the report said.
