Case Updates: 1 update(s) available
The 12 pit bulls confiscated from a West Third Street warehouse late Thursday had "various degrees of scarring consistent with dogfighting," a Montgomery County animal shelter official said.
Mick Sagester, supervisor of the county's Animal Resource Center, said three of the dogs were licensed. All of them have the same owner who lives in Dayton, but not at the address where the dogs were found.
A pit bull euthanized Friday afternoon was not licensed.
The shelter will hold stray unlicensed dogs for three days and licensed dogs for 14 days "unless there is a severe injury to the animal," Sagester said.
Housing dogs who have come in as a result of police investigations has a financial impact on the shelter, Sagester said.
Owners are normally charged a $30 impounding fee per dog and a $10 fee for each day the dog stays at the shelter.
But the county picks up the cost if the dogs are unclaimed.
Besides the 11 remaining pit bulls confiscated Thursday night, the shelter is still holding 13 others associated with pending court cases, Sagester said.
"We are concerned about this type of thing going on in this community," Sagester said. "We hope this does not continue."
Welsh said the case has been turned over to detectives familiar with dogfighting for investigation.
Anyone wanting to report dog abuse should contact their local police or the shelter at 898-4457.
Case UpdatesOne of the 12 pit bulls that Montgomery County Animal Resource Officers confiscated from a warehouse late Thursday was euthanized Friday afternoon, according to Mick Sagester, supervisor of the county's Animal Resource Center, 6790 Webster St.
The dog had to be carried out on a stretcher after police found the dogs inside a warehouse at 2217 West Third St. in the police department's Third District, Sagester said.
"He was euthanized for humane reasons at 12:45 p.m.," Sagester said. "He had a severe infection of the mouth, jaw, on his eyes and limbs. He had severe open wounds on his legs."
Police were called to the West Third Street address after they received a report of an injured dog, police Lt. Patrick Welsh said. Police believe the site might have been used in a pit bull fighting operation.
Welsh said a citizen apparently saw the injured dog at a warehouse on French Lane near West Third Street, but Sagester said it was determined later that the dogs were actually found at 2217 West Third.
When police arrived about 11 p.m. to investigate they found several other pit bull-type dogs and evidence that the warehouse had been used for dog fighting, Welsh said.
"I don't know right now if we're talking about a fighting location or a storage location or some kind of training facility," Welsh said.
Several of the dogs had obvious facial injuries police believe may have been received by fighting.
Only three of the dogs were licensed, Sagester said. Those dogs have the same owner and the owner's home address is in Dayton, but not at the address where the dogs were found.
