A cat was found mutilated in half Thursday night on the city's far North Side. A resident in the 2800 block of Encino River found the front half of a cat lying in the back yard of her home.
Tracey Green, a neighbor who works at a cat shelter, was quickly called to investigate the mutilation.
"We're horrified, obviously. Not surprised," Green said. "You really need to be careful with your animals. You need to keep them indoors, especially around Halloween; there is a lot of sick people out there."
Green said that the cat was cut with a hatchet and very little blood was found.
The cat is believed to belong to a resident in the neighborhood.
Police were called out to make a report.
Green said that with Halloween a little over two weeks away, her shelter won't adopt out cats due to safety concerns.
