A 74-year-old Whatcom County woman has been charged with animal cruelty after she allegedly shot and killed a neighbor's golden retriever puppy.

If convicted, Evelyn Wade could face up to a year in jail.

Police say she admitted to shooting the 6-month-old puppy named Bandit when the dog came on her property and knocked over a birdhouse.

The dog was left paralyzed and had to be euthanized.

Wade is also facing a misdemeanor charge for allegedly firing in the direction of neighbors during the incident.


Case Updates

The 74- year-old Lake Samish woman who shot and killed a neighbor's golden retriever puppy has been charged with felony animal cruelty.

Evelyn Stella Wade pleaded not guilty to first-degree animal cruelty at an arraignment last Friday. If convicted, Wade could face as little as a small fine or up to 12 months in Whatcom County Jail.

Wade admitted to shooting Bandit, a 6-month-old puppy that belonged to Jim and Vicki Hassi, when the dog came on to her property and knocked over a birdhouse.

A trial date has been set for Dec. 17 in the case. Wade also has a Dec. 11 court date on a misdemeanor charge for allegedly firing in the direction of neighbors during the incident.
