The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward to help bring a possible dog killer to justice.

Officials with the national organization are offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for shooting a dog and abandoning the animal in a Dumpster in Brewton.

Renee Jones, director of the Humane Society of Escambia County, said Tuesday an injured dog was found in a dumpster by employees at the Dollar General Store.

Jones said problems concerning animal well fair have always been a problem. Human attitudes toward animals need some adjustment.

We dont have an animal problem here, Jones said. We have a people problem.

Jones said the people problem is the reason this animal was left to die.

The dog appeared to have been shot, Jones said. She was initially alert and friendly but was in serious pain when we found her.

Jones said a medical examination determined the dogs injuries were too severe to be corrected by any treatment. The animal was euthanized on Wednesday, she said.

The things that were done to this dog are considered to be actions of cruelty, Jones said. The offense against this animal is punishable as a Class C felony and carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Jones said she has had several pieces of information reported to her office concerning the case of the Dumpster dog, which the group named DeeDee.

We have had several calls this week about DeeDee, Jones said. We have gotten information from people all around us. Some calls have come from Santa Rosa and Escambia counties in Florida as well as right here in our county. We have been following up on the information, but we dont have what would be called a solid lead in the case.

Jones said the cooperation of police officers in this and other cases of animal cruelty has been wonderful.

Right now, we are working with Russell Martin with the Brewton Police Department, Jones said. He has been very helpful in working this case with us. He is doing everything he can to help us out.

Jones said the reward offered by the HSUS is typical in such cases as the one here last week.

The HSUS is very supportive of shelters across America, Jones said. We dont get any funding from them, but they are supportive of us in the area of training and education for our workers. They are also instrumental in seeking resolution in these cases by offering rewards for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of offenders.

Jones said the legal aspects of animal cruelty case are just now beginning to get the attention they deserve.

The laws are just starting to be passed about animal cruelty and the penalties of those crimes, Jones said. The enforcement of those laws is just now being learned by police officers and we are all dealing with challenges in that area.
