Pit bulls neglected - 17 seized from moving van Philadelphia, PA (US)Incident Date: Friday, Sep 14, 2007 County: Philadelphia
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: woman
Authorities said a woman has been charged with several counts of cruelty to animals after police found her Friday afternoon trying to corral pit bulls escaping from a moving van.
Chopper 10 was over the scene in the 700 block of Sanger Street. Police said the woman was moving the 17 pit bulls stuffed in the truck to a new house.
The dogs were aggressive, and police said they helped separate some of the ones that got out of the truck and were fighting before standing back to wait for animal control officers to come deal with them.
Several dogs were tied to the outside of the truck and some were tied to surrounding fences.
One dog was stuck between the rungs of a hand truck with a dog kennel hooked to it but it continued to fight with another dog until it was separated and tied to a fence.
A few dogs sat inside the truck's cab and even the backseat of a police car.
Animal control offericers later removed the pit bulls one-by-one, and said the dogs were neglected. A veterinarian was checking out each of the dogs Friday night at SPCA headquarters in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia.
Police said the woman was charged with several counts of animal cruelty, but her name was not released Friday night.
Officers also check the woman's house in Oxford Circle, where the smell was "horrendous -- absolutely disgusting," one man told NBC 10.
Oxford Circle neighbor Tori Askins said the woman, who did not have children, had been moving for the past three days and brought more dogs out each night. References« PA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Philadelphia County, PA
