Police arrested three people and confiscated about 50 chickens during a raid on an alleged cockfighting operation Friday morning.
Police said they had obtained a search warrant for a home in the 200 block of South G Street after receiving information about illegal cockfighting there. They found a number of hens and fighting roosters in the backyard along with illegal spurs and a liquid described as a "performance-enhancing substance" for the fighting cocks, according to Toppenish police Sgt. Adam Diaz.
"They had the spurs, books, vitamins, syringes, you name it," Diaz said. "And there were chickens everywhere."
Police also found four firearms, including an assault rifle, and arrested the three people living at the home. All three suspects, identified as two men ages 51 and 25 and a 47-year-old woman, were booked at Toppenish city jail for possible charges of illegal animal fighting and weapons offenses.
