As many as 40 people crowded in the basement of an abandoned Inkster home watching two pit bulls fight in a makeshift ring fashioned by 2-foot high plywood walls.

When two officers arrived to the home in the 1100 block of Helen, responding to an anonymous tip, the crowd scattered: some went down the street and others hopped a back fence, a detective told a judge.

In the end, officers arrested nine people, ranging in age 19 to 53. Eight of the nine were arraigned on August 31 in Inksters 22nd District Court before Judge Sylvia James on felony charges of attending an animal fight. The charge is punishable by up to four years.

One of the suspects, Marlon Rogers, 43, of Detroit, has two extradition warrants on dogfighting charges from Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, Inkster Police Detective Gene Derwick told James before she ordered him held on a $100,000 cash bond.

Rogers also served two years probation for possessing animal fighting equipment in Michigan.

The other suspects arraigned Friday are: Halbert Rogers, 39, of Detroit; William Barker, 32, of Inkster; Kedric Gray, 32, of Taylor; Jamie Williams, 36, of Inkster; Jessie McDaniel, 53, of Detroit; Derrick Hall, 27, of Detroit, and Shaun Woods, 19, of Detroit.

McDaniel was the only suspect given a personal bond by James because he did not have any warrants and no criminal history. Other bonds ranged from $7,500 to $35,000, with suspects being able to gain release from jail if they posted 10 %.

A ninth suspect, a 27-year old man from Detroit, wasnt arraigned because he was hospitalized with chest pains after his arrest.

During the hearing, Marlon Rogers blurted out that officers shot one of the dog. Judge James rebuked him, explaining that his outburst just placed him at the crime scene.

Detective Derwick said after the arraignments that the dogs turned on the officers who tried to separate them and had to be shot. Police also seized about $800 at the scene, according to court records.
