Several 3-week-old puppies are getting a second chance at life after they were tossed from a moving car. Witnesses say they saw someone push a box full of puppies out of a window of a moving car and toss it to the side of the road near Castroville and 36th street last week.
Jeanette De La Rosa was one of those witnesses. She told News 4 she didn't really think much of it when she saw the person push the box out of a car. But then she saw two pups about the size of a blade of grass fly out of the box. Jeanette and another person stopped to help. "This guy picked up 4. He said he couldn't take anymore, and he left the two behind. I went ahead and took them," said Jeanette. The pups were not injured, but Jeanette told News 4 the incident really upset her.
The Humane Society gets several calls a month from people trying to get rid of unwanted pets. Humane Society spokesperson Cathy McCoy said a they frequently find puppies and kittens tossed inside dumpsters. Parking lots are another place people dump unwanted pets. It is a crime, but catching the people can be tough.. "You need to have a lot of proof. It is a 'he said, she said' kind of thing, and it can take a while," McCoy said.
Jeanette tried to get that proof, but the driver who dumped the puppies got away. "He took off right as the light turned green. He was way a head of me," Jeanette told News 4. Jeanette said she'd like to adopt the dogs when they are old enough. She's currently serving as their foster owner.
The Humane Society is looking for more foster families like Jeanette to place dogs and cats who are too young to be adopted, are recovering from surgery or who are pets of military personnel deployed overseas.
