Stray cats trapped, hanged to death Kensington, PA (US)Incident Date: Monday, Aug 27, 2007 County: Philadelphia
Charges: Misdemeanor Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Roger Hill
A Kensington man is charged with animal cruelty for allegedly trying to rid his neighborhood of cats.
SPCA said it is another heinous act of animal cruelty. Roger Hill is behind bars for hanging a cat. Investigators said the Kensington man told them that he was doing his neighbors a favor.
Authorities said Roger Hill set up makeshift traps at his home on the 35-hundred block of Kensington Avenue that lured neighborhood cats and killed them.
Steven Nimchuk confronted Hill when he noticed some of the stray cats in the neighborhood were disappearing.
"I went to ask him why are you trapping these cats? Why are you keeping them? And he said you keep them out of my yard and I won't kill them," said Steven Nimchuck. "He was a strange guy, but I never thought he was killing cats like that."
The SPCA said Hill admitted to killing at least one cat left in a plastic bag in front of his home.
"No remorse whatsoever. None. He admitted it freely to the police," said Lisa Rodgers of the SPCA. "They found other cats in the back that he hadn't killed yet."
The SPCA is caring for one of the cats that was saved. The animal will be okay.
Neighbors on the block are disgusted. They told action News they consider the few stray cats in the area their pets, and often nurse them back to health when they are sick. Hill apparently thought the cats were a nuisance.
"He said he kills them all the time because there shouldn't be so many stray cats in his neighborhood. That was his excuse," said Nimchuck. References« PA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Philadelphia County, PA
