An Oceanside resident who woke up to gunfire early Tuesday morning found her small dog shot to death, police said.

The shooting was reported at 4:50 a.m. in the 4200 block of Lonnie Street, Sgt. Leonard Mata said.

The woman woke up to the sound of gunshots and went outside to find the dog, a schnauzer, dead, Mata said.

The humane society was called to pick up the dog's body and an autopsy will be performed because the case is a criminal matter, the sergeant said.

No suspects were in custody by early Tuesday morning.
