A citation was issued on Aug 22, 2007 to a rural Knox County farmer who has recently been under investigation for alleged neglect of his herd of cattle.

George David Vernon was charged with cruelty to animals by Knox County Animal Control Officer Roger Reed, who visited Vernons Ball Road farm to follow up after investigating neighbors complaints in July.

At that time, Reed counseled Vernon to cull his herd in order to improve its feeding and watering conditions. The presence of a large number of aggressive, uncastrated bulls in the herd was apparently preventing older and weaker animals from getting access to feed. The pasture had been grazed to less than 1 inch of grass, and low-hanging tree leaves had evidently been stripped bare by the undernourished animals.

Reed said that when he visited Vernons farm Wednesday morning, conditions had not improved since his previous visit.

Im citing him with cruelty to animals, Reed said.

He declined to comment further about what he saw at Vernons farm, pending the hearing of the case in court on Sept. 7.

Reed did say that Vernons probation officer in Morrow County, John Bartolucci, has requested a copy of the Knox County citation for reference in charges pending against Vernon in Morrow County. Vernon, whose property straddles the Knox/Morrow county line, has been charged in Morrow County with violating the probation he was put on after being convicted of earlier charges of improper disposal of cattle corpses.

Case Updates

On August 24 in Morrow County, visiting Judge Phil W. Campbell said George David Vernon had until Sept. 10 to provide evidence he is fulfilling the terms of his probation for a previous conviction on improper disposal of animal corpses. At that point, Vernon is required to show proof to the Morrow County probation officers that he has tagged his cattle, obtained a veterinary statement regarding the health of the herd, retained receipts indicating the purchase of sufficient food to feed the animals, retained information indicating the use of fertilizer, and retained information documenting the adequate watering of the herd.

If Vernon does not provide this information to the satisfaction of the probation officers, Campbell will issue a warrant for Vernons seizure and incarceration.
