Two bait dogs dumped at roadside
Johns Island, SC (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Aug 17, 2007
County: Charleston

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

"Harry" is named after the Harry Potter series, because he's the dog who lived. He'll also be permanently scarred. "Hagrid" is his fellow survivor, and giant protector.

Harry and Hagrid were found on John's Island Friday, and have been through the real-life horror of dog fighting.

The veterenarian, the North Charleston K9 officer who happened to be on site, and a Charleston County deputy all say Harry and Hagrid are definitely bait dogs, used in pit bull fighting.

Bait dogs are used to train or excite fighting dogs before they go into the ring.

The dogs were found near Edanville and River Road. A good samaratin found them, picked them up, and got them to a veterinarian. Deputies searched the area, but found no evidence of a dog fighting ring.

Their belief is because he was a bait dog, he was dumped outside of where the fight activity would have taken place so as not to be able to be traced back to the ring.

Harry, a small, friendly beagle, is exactly the type of dog fighters look for as bait. Experts say they will take them anywhere they can get them, including from Free Puppy advertisements, or worse.

Experts say they will steel your pets out of your yard to use them.

Hagrid is in foster care. Aside from a few bite marks, he is healthy. Harry's prognosis is good. His scar is a permanent reminder that dog fighting is right here in our back yard.
