County: Rensselaer

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Mark J. Stratton

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A town man was charged with felony animal cruelty Wednesday after police said he threw a kitten into a storm drain.

Mark J. Stratton, 23, allegedly held the kitten by the tail and asked bystanders if they wanted the animal, which was alive at the time, before throwing it in the storm drain. Police said witnesses contacted authorities, who had workers from the highway department remove the storm grate to remove the dead animal.

Stratton admitted throwing the kitten into the drain but said he thought it was already dead, according to police.

The kitten was taken to the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society for a necropsy. Three other kittens and two adult cats were seized and also taken to the Humane Society.

Police said Stratton was sent to Rensselaer County Jail without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m.

Case Updates

The case of a Hoosick Falls man charged with throwing a week-old kitten down a sewer will head to a grand jury. Mark Stratton appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing. Stratton was arrested last week after neighbors say they saw him dangle the kitten over a sewer before putting it down the drain. A judge decided Monday that the case should go to the grand jury. Stratton was sent back to Rensselaer County jail without bail.
