A man and woman were arrested for allegedly abusing three pitbulls so badly they had to be euthanized, police said.

Calvin Brooks, 39, and Tamara McGriff, 26, both from Boynton Beach, face cruelty to animal charges, according to a Boynton Beach police report.

Boynton Beach Police and animal control responded to a call from a citizen who was worried about the welfare of three dogs being kept in the back yard of a home on Northwest Sixth Avenue.

They reportedly found a female pitbull chained to a tree with heavy tow chain. The dog's ribs, hips and spine bones were visible, and it had open wounds all over its body. The dog was covered in fleas and had nothing to drink but a bucket of green water.

Another severely emaciated female pitbull was found nearby, lying in her own excrement inside a chain-link cage. Officers reportedly had to use bolt-cutters to get inside. The dog was curled up and unresponsive. When an animal control officer put a leash around its neck, the dog tried to walk but immediately stumbled.

A third dog, a male pitbull, was being kept inside a similar cage. He was filthy and covered in fleas. There was a bucket of dirty water inside the cage, but no food, police said.

Officers spoke with McGriff, who said that one of the dogs belonged to her, but that she did not know the owner of the other two dogs.

Brooks later told officers that the other two dogs belonged to a friend of his in Belle Glade and that they were going to be used for breeding purposes.

The dogs were taken to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control for evaluation. All three were in such bad shape that they had to be euthanized, according to the report.
