Bait dog abandoned on side of road
Vineland, NJ (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Aug 2, 2007
County: Cumberland

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A brown-and-white dog was found dumped at the corner of Maurice River Parkway and Oak Road on August 9. His body, muscular but limp, was covered with bites. The flesh of his ears was torn and crumpled like paper. A purple substance was found covering his many wounds.

His eyes were still open, and he was conscious when agents from the local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals picked him up from animal control and rushed him to the shelter.

Despite his injuries, he did not fight back or show fear.

This may not have been the first time Maurice, as he was named, had been thrown into the ring of a pit bull dogfight.

Bev Greco, who as executive director of the Cumberland County SPCA had seen fighting dogs before, stated "He was bait… It certainly seems that way because he showed no aggression."

In pain from his injuries and unable to be re-housed, Maurice was euthanized Friday morning.
