A case of animal cruelty is under investigation by the Overton County Sheriff's Department.

Two puppies and their mother were stolen from the yard of their home in the rural community of Allons on Sunday, August 12, and were "tortured and killed in our woods behind our house," said Saralee Cross, of Old Celina Road.

Cross and her family had gone to Dale Hollow Lake for the afternoon and returned to find their three dogs missing.

"They were mixed breed dogs, the mother and two 15-week old pups who were so cute and sweet and friendly," said Cross. "We just loved them, and everybody around here did too."

They had named the puppies Chewbacca and Buster.

Saralee, husband, Butch, and their sons, Colton and Cory, began searching for the dogs immediately. Later, when they saw birds circling an area in their woods, they went to investigate and found the two puppies dead.

One of the dogs had baling twine around its neck, Saralee said.

"And we still haven't found the mother dog."

The idea that someone in their community would be so cruel as to kill "these sweet little dogs" is not just sickening to the Cross family, but also seriously frightening, she said.

"It's really disturbing to think that somebody out there would do this," she said. "If they would do this to animals, I don't know what else they might do."

Although they haven't found the mother dog, they are certain that she is dead, because she never left the yard and stayed gone this long, Saralee said.

The Cross family asked all their neighbors if they saw anyone come onto their property that afternoon, and no one did, she said.

That means the animal killers came from the backside of the property, she figures.

She called the Overton Sheriff's Department. and a deputy came out and took a report. But so far, no arrests have been made.

Case Updates

A case of animal cruelty that occurred last month in Overton County remains under investigation, and a worldwide organization has stepped in to help through the offer of reward money for information about the case.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA is offering up to $1,000 for information about a case that will lead to an arrest and conviction of the person or people involved in the case of the murder of two puppies last month in Overton County and the disappearance of the puppies' mother.

Friends of the family whose pets were taken and murdered have collected an additional $600 for information about the case.

As reported last month, two puppies and their mother were stolen from the yard of the home of Saralee and Butch Cross in the rural community of Allons one Sunday and were tortured and killed in the woods behind the Cross's home.

Saralee Cross reported that she and her husband and two teenage sons had gone to Dale Hollow Lake one afternoon and returned to find that two of their four mixed-breed puppies were missing as well as the puppies' two-year-old mother.

The family searched the woods behind their home and found the two puppies dead, and that one of the puppies had baling twine around its neck.

The family has still been unable to find the mother dog.

The Overton County Sheriff's Department has been investigating since the animal cruelty case was reported, but the Herald-Citizen was unable to reach investigators today as to how much progress they have made in the case.

Saralee Cross said she believes the sheriff's department has been interviewing a potential suspect.

She and her family and still reeling from what happened to their dogs.

"It really has made them (her kids) kind of angry, and it's made us kind of paranoid. I always kind of felt safe. This has changed the way I feel about things," Saralee said.

But she's grateful to the way the community has stepped in to help with the offer of reward money for information about the crime.

In a statement released by PETA with the offer of reward money, PETA Casework Division Manager Martin Mersereau said, "Animal abusers are cowards. They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them. Area residents have reason to be concerned. According to leading mental health professionals and law enforcement agencies, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to all animals, including humans."
