In November 2001, a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy spotted two men, Tarrence Cross and Ira Jenkins, fighting their dogs behind an apartment complex in Lauderdale Lakes.

The officer saw five suspects gathered in a parking lot cheering on two dogs that were fighting, and after three onlookers fled, the two dog owners were arrested.

Both animals were less than a year old, and the deputy found serious bites and puncture wounds to their muzzles, jowls and necks.

Both owners were charged with animal-fighting, but only one, Cross, was convicted and served 180 days in jail.
