A Newman man in northern Western Australia has been fined $10,000 for stabbing a relative's dog.

July 30, 2007, Joseph Clause, 22, walked into the living room of his relative's Newman home and asked for cigarettes. When his request was refused he took his anger out on the family's dog by stabbing it with a kitchen knife.

The wound has been treated and the dog is believed to be recovering well.

Clause was fined under the Animal Cruelty Act by two justices of the peace in the local magistrates court.
