5 horses shot dead by soldier
Pormpuraaw, QLD (AU)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jun 30, 2007

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Ralph Max Schweizer

A north Queensland soldier is expected to appear in court next month, charged with shooting five horses. Owners of the Cape York cattle property found the dead animals earlier this month.

Senior Constable Michele Snairdero, from Pormpuraaw police, says the owners of Strathgorden Station were shocked when they found three horses, a yearling and a six-month-old foal. "It's an unusual occurrence, those sorts of things don't usually happen up here," he said.

Ralph Max Schweizer, 20, of Townsville's Lavarack Barracks, has been charged with injuring stock and dangerous conduct with a weapon. He is expected to appear in the Pormpuraaw Magistrates Court next month.

The Department of Defence has declined to comment on the incident while the matter is before the court.

Two months ago, six soldiers from the same barracks were found guilty of cruelty to animals after they tortured and killed a litter of kittens.
