Dog locked in hot car, 120 degrees inside Williamsburg, VA (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Aug 5, 2007 County: James City

Alleged: » Kenneth Williams » Patricia Williams
Two people have been charged with cruelty to animals after leaving their dog in a hot car at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center for three hours during last week's heat wave.
Patricia and Kenneth Williams, of Keystone Heights, Fla., each face one count of animal cruelty, a Class 1 misdemeanor, Williamsburg Police spokesman David Sloggie said.
Sloggie said officers responded to the visitor center about 12:15 p.m. Aug. 5, where they found a small, white dog inside a parked vehicle. The driver's side window was open about halfway, and passenger's side window was cracked about one inch, Sloggie said. There was no water in the car for the dog to drink, and officers measured the temperature inside the car to be 120 degrees, he said.
When officers tried to get into the vehicle, Sloggie said, the dog became aggressive, so they instead placed a bowl of water through the window onto the driver's seat. The dog's owners returned to the car about 2 p.m., and told police they had left the dog at 11 a.m., expecting to be gone for only a short time. The dog was initially seized by Williamsburg-James City County Animal Control, but was later returned to the owners.
The Williams' case is set for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 14 in Williamsburg-James City County General District Court. References« VA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in James City County, VA
