The Aiken County Sheriff's Office reported Friday it had arrested an Aiken man and his son after the teenager allegedly killed a dog and shot the animal's owner in the face.

Derek M. Moore, 18, of Aiken, is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and cruelty to animals, according to a news release.

Walter Moore, 42, the younger man's father who also is from Aiken, is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and cruelty to animals.

The shooting victim was identified as Carlton E. Cantrell, 50, of Aiken.

The sheriff's office released this account of the incident:

About 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Walter Moore was driving his pickup, while his son rode in the bed of the truck, along Muddy Branch Road.

The pair drove up on the victim's dog standing in the road. The teenager shot and killed the dog with a shotgun.

When Cantrell, who was standing in front of his home, pulled out a handgun, the younger Moore fired on the victim and struck him in the face.

Aiken County Emergency Medical Services took the victim to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

A preliminary investigation revealed Walter Moore got into an argument with the victim earlier in the evening about dogs standing in the road.

More charges are likely. Both men were being held Friday at the Aiken County Detention Center.
