Horse neglect - 4 horses living in small chicken coop Lempster, NH (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Jan 19, 2003 County: Sullivan
Disposition: Not Charged
Person of Interest: Marcie Durgan
Animal rescuers saved four starving horses who were living in a small chicken coop in Lempster.
No charges were brought against the owner, Marcie Durgan, but an investigation was still open Sunday the 19th, said Mike Batista, Lempster police officer.
"The horses were very unhealthy. You could see their ribs," Batista said.
The four horses, all mares, were dehydrated and starving, said Jennifer Brown of the New Hampshire Humane Association. She said they were caked with manure.
"You could see that there were no hoof prints, in or out of the coop, and no human footprints, either. So you tell me when they were last fed or watered," Brown said. References« NH State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Sullivan County, NH
