A West Side woman was arrested on four counts of animal cruelty after officers discovered a dead pit bull dog in her yard Thursday.

The investigation revealed two additional dogs trapped inside a sweltering garage and another dog tied to the back of a garage. All were without food and water, said John Hall, a humane agent with Animal Charity.

The three surviving dogs were removed from the home. Breena Hines, 24, of North Belle Vista Avenue, was arrested at the scene, said Hall.

An Akita removed from the property is believed to have been stolen. Another dog displayed scarring consistent with dog fighting. It had to be put down because of poor health and aggression issues, said Hall.

One of the rescued animals pit bull terrier puppy was taken to Animal Charity. Hall said the dog was "almost skeletal."

"I don't know if it's going to have to be put down," he said.

The Akita was returned to the dog warden, he said.

Hines faces up to 2 years in prison, if convicted under the current charges, Hall said.
