Two juveniles face dogfighting charges, according to the Nebraska Humane Society, but the boys said they were just trying to stop a fight.
In a news release, NHS said an animal control officer saw a dogfight in progress near 25th and Pinkney streets on Sunday afternoon. The officer said two 16-year-old boys, each with a pit bull on a leash, were observed having their dogs attack another pit bull that had run up to them.
The animal control officer, along with neighbors, heard the two boys yelling for their dogs to attack the other dog, the NHS said. The fight lasted several minutes before the animal control officer could break it up.
One dog was hurt in the fight.
The officer said the two boys ran to a house about six blocks away, taking their dogs with them. The animal control officer followed them and called Omaha police.
On Thursday, the Douglas County Attorneys Office Juvenile Division filed petitions on Bryant Giles and Keilen Fantroy, charging them with animal fighting and obstructing enforcement.
The boys told KETV NewsWatch 7 that they never told the dogs to attack. They said they were trying to break up the fight when the third dog approached their animals.
The mother of one of the teens said animal control officers initially ticketed her for not having the proper licensing paperwork.
The Nebraska Humane Society's Mark Langan said the boys' story doesn't match his officer's version of events.
"The evidence at the scene, and what my animal control officer heard, and what neighbors heard, tells us that didn't happen. The animal control officer heard that -- specifically -- that they yelled to their dogs, 'Get them, get them.' They prodded their dogs to attack this other pit bull," Langan said.
Langan said the fight lasted several minutes. References « More cases in Douglas County, NE
