Animal control officers on Tuesday found two dead horses and three horses that appeared to be in dire condition in a field near the Cleburne city limits.
Cleburne police received a call about the horses on South Highway 171 at about 8 a.m.
According to reports:
* The horses were in a field about 3 acres in size.
* There was no grass, no hay, and no feed visible in the field.
* The horses appeared emaciated and their ribs and hip bones were easily visible.
* The horses were also diseased with visible sores covering their bodies.
The owner of the horses, Michael Greenslade, 49, of Cleburne, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, punishable by a fine of up to $4,000 and one year in jail.
Greenslade lives in a house on the property where the horses were kept. He was transported to the Johnson County Jail. The Humane Society of North Texas was contacted to take possession of the remaining horses.
Case UpdatesGreenslade was ordered to pay court and investigation costs and the Humane Society's costs to house and care for the animals, and the horses were awarded to the Humane Society's custody.

A Cleburne man charged with animal cruelty after dead and sick horses were found on his property is out of jail after posing bond.
Officers said they found two dead horses and three others in need of immediate care when they arrived at the property of Michael Greenslade.
Greenslade is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty. He faces up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine if convicted.
