Calcasieu Animal Service Officer John Sherman has picked up his fare share of fighter dogs. But the pit bull he found on July 27 behind a business on Kirkman Street is among one of the worst he's ever seen.

"I found him behind a business here it was pretty bad," said Sherman. "He was bleeding very heavily, so I mean I had to stop bleeding in some instances. So he obviously was fought within an hours time."

Sherman says the dog was likely abandoned because it lost its fight. Further inspection, revealed more signs of abuse and inhumane treatment.

"Severe puncture wounds all over its leg on its back. The dogs ears had been cut off, a home job. One ear was completely missing, the other ear was shortly cropped," described Calcasieu Animal Shelter Director Diana Morales.

Morales has seen this before and says this dog has a long history of fighting. "He's probably three years old or so and he's had a very, very violent life. He has wound from yesterday, but he has some bad scarring from other standoffs that he's been in," said Morales.

Each year the shelter rescues thousands of dogs, 600 to 700 of them being pit bulls. About a 1/3 of those believed to be fighters. Even though they are friendly to people, often times these dogs can't be saved.

"The animal will not be able to be placed, unfortunately. It does have some really bad dog to dog aggression. It's a very people friendly dog... He let me put my hands in his mouth and look for wounds, but not something we're going to be able to place in a home," said Morales.
