A Colorado Springs woman is charged with animal cruelty after neighbors report seeing numerous pitbulls tied up in the backyard, with no food and water, for over a week.

The Humane Society and police went out to the house at 4445 Melville Thursday impounding two sick pit bulls. One had been roaming the neighborhood looking for food, the other was still tied up.

I felt helpless, said neighbor Sindi Blanchette.

Blanchette lives across the street, she says she has watched the pitbulls starve, tied up in the backyard, for nearly a week.

They did not have food and water at that time we arrived. They started to pant from dehydration, they also had fly strikes on their ears, said Ann Davenport, Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Officials with The Humane Society say they have been called out to the house 13 times this year, including when one of the dogs bit a child. They finally impounded two of the dogs Thursday night after neighbors reported one of them was roaming free.

This dog had not been fed in seven days, and I didn't know what my 5 year old would like to a starving pit bull, said Blanchette.

The owner no longer resides in the home and has been charged with animal cruelty.
