BC SPCA animal cruelty officers have seized a former racehorse, "Cash my Marker", from a property in Logan Lake. The 11-year-old thoroughbred horse was emaciated and covered in hundreds of ticks. Senior Animal Protection Officer Kent Kokoska, says Cash my Marker scored only one out of nine on a body conditioning scale. "It was very disturbing to see such a beautiful animal so malnourished and thin," says Kokoska.
The horse is currently in an SPCA foster home in Kamloops where he is receiving proper nutritional care and has been treated for parasites. "He will require some dental work when he regains his strength, but the prognosis for recovery looks very good."
The BC SPCA investigation continues and charges are pending in the case. If charged and convicted, the owner of the horse faces a maximum fine of $2,000, up to six months in jail and a prohibition on owning animals for a period determined by a judge. References
