County: Virginia Beach City

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Charles Anthony Smalls

A Virginia Beach man is accused of shooting a family's dog to death.

Police arrested 22-year-old Charles Anthony Smalls on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say he shot a 12-year-old boxer-pit bull mix named Shadow in the head.

The family found the dog outside their Valley Stream Court home back in June.

According to police, an investigation into the crime indicated that three suspects had been seen leaving the area where the dog had been shot. A neighborhood canvass was conducted and leads were developed. A suspect was later identified and subsequently questioned by the lead investigator.

Smalls was arrested at his home without incident. He's charged with Animal Cruelty and Unlawful Use of a Gun. The investigation is ongoing and a search for the weapon used in this crime continues.
