Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley said Thursday a parish resident has been arrested for animal cruelty after complaints from citizens about horses being neglected.

After an investigation, deputies arrested Laken Colson, 19, of 611 Pint Road, Farmerville, on aggravated cruelty to animals. She was later released from the Union Parish Detention Center after posting a $2,500 bond.

Buckley said a complaint was received July 13. Deputies located the horses and determined a veterinarian should be called.

The vet examined the animals on Saturday and determined they were malnourished and that one of the animals should be humanely put down because of its deteriorated condition, Buckley said.

The remaining horse was seized as evidence, secured at another location and placed under the care of a veterinarian, the sheriff said.

Buckley said his deputies also went to another location in the Truxno community with the vet and checked a location where the accused reportedly had other horses.

The veterinarian determined that these horses were not being mistreated.
