Pontotoc County Sheriff, Pete Peterson, says this is the absolute worst case of animal cruelty he has ever seen. Sheriff Peterson says the site of the abused dog literally made him sick to his stomach. Sheriff's officials say Tuesday they responded to a call from a resident in Ada's Country Hills Trailer Park about a dog they believe hadn't been fed for days. When deputies arrived on the scene they say they saw the Pitbull with a bicycle chain tightly wrapped around his neck, he was covered in maggots and bones were sticking out of the animal's body. Deputies took the dog to a local veterinarian for help.

Sheriff Peterson, says, "I've seen pictures before in thirty years that I've been in this business of animal cruelty, but this just takes the cookie, if you would. I've never seen anything this bad and for this animal to still be alive."

When deputies asked the dog's caretaker how long it has been since he had been fed, she told them two days. Sheriff Peterson says this type of behavior towards an animal is a felony and will not be taken lightly. He says charges have been filed with the district attorney. Peterson says the name of the owner is not yet being revealed but there will be an arrest made by his department very soon. Officials say the dog is alive and seems to be doing alot better at this time.

Pauletta Samis faces one felony count of animal cruelty stemming from an incident on July 18, when Pontotoc County sheriff's deputies removed a starving dog with maggot-infested wounds from her home.

Sheriff Pete Peterson says a caller alerted deputies to the dog's condition. According to the report, deputies found the dog tied up with a cable lock wrapped around its neck. Its bones were visible and its head was swollen. A veterinarian says the cable was wrapped so tightly around the dog's neck that it had started to grow into its flesh and was cutting off blood flow.

Peterson reportedly stated at the time, "We'll find a home for him. This dog has already been to hell and back.

Deputies said Samis couldn't remember the last time she fed the dog. She will appear in court next on September 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the Pontotoc County Courthouse.

Pauletta Samis, 36, faces one felony count of animal cruelty after sheriff's deputies removed a starving and maggot-infested dog from her home in rural Pontotoc County earlier this week.

Deputies said Samis couldn't remember the last time she fed the dog, Peterson said. Samis also told investigators the dog's owners had left the dog in her care.

The dog named Casey after the deputy who picked him up was taken to an Ada veterinary clinic and seems to be recovering, Peterson said.

"I really didn't think this dog was going to make it, Sheriff Pete Peterson said, "but I saw him last night, and he's going to make it. He has such a strong will. We'll find a home for him. This dog has already been to hell and back.

Peterson said people have already contacted the department wanting to adopt the dog or help pay the dog's medical bills.

Samis is expected to return to court Aug. 2.

Pauletta Samis has been charged with a felony count of animal cruelty. Pontotoc County sheriff's deputies removed the starving dog with maggot-infested wounds from Samis' home this week. The cruelty charge was filed on July 20.

Sheriff Pete Peterson says a caller alerted deputies to the dog's condition. Deputies found the dog tied up. A cable lock had been wrapped around its neck twice. Its bones were visible and its head was swollen.

The dog was taken to an animal clinic where he was given intravenous fluids, medication and painkillers.

A veterinarian says the cable was wrapped so tightly around the dog's neck that it had started to grow into its flesh and was cutting off blood flow.
