The animal control officer in Lynn, Mass., said he will file animal cruelty charges against the former residents of a house after a dog skeleton was found in a kennel cage there on July 16.

A contractor hired to clean out the house found the dog and called Officer Kevin Farnsworth to investigate, reported the Lynn Daily Item.

Farnsworth said he thinks the former tenants abandoned the property and left the animal behind to die. An animal cruelty charge is a felony offense, Farnsworth said.

The house contained furniture and other items and mail inside was addressed to Patricia and Rebecca Schrepfer and Travis King, according to the newspaper, which said property records indicated the Schrepfers bought the 122 Adams St. house in February 2004.

Former residents could be summonsed to court if city officials can track them down and file a criminal complaint.
