Police in Trotwood said someone shot a dog Tuesday morning and they are looking for the person who pulled the trigger.

Shawn Barker who owns the dog said he has had his shepard-collie mix for four years. He said the dog was running around just a few doors down from his home on Marlin Avenue when someone shot him.

Authorities said the dog lost a lot of blood and was shot in the paw. The owner said he heard something that sounded like a firecracker and then saw police officers everywhere.

Officials with animal control also showed up at the scene.

Barker said his dog was friendly and well-trained. At this time, he said he does not know why the animal got away from the house.

Police said several people heard the gunshot, but no one saw who fired the gun.

Barkers said he and his family cannot afford treatment for the dog so he signed over his rights to animal control. The dog was euthanized after officials said the dog's injuries were too great, and could not be saved.
