Thirty-one pit bulls, some yelping puppies with signs of injury, were removed from a Reelsboro man's property Thursday.

Investigators say the dogs were being bred and trained to fight.

A makeshift treadmill that dogs are put on to build muscle was confiscated, along with bloody portions of dog pens.

The owner of the dogs, Corey Doran Jordan, 36, of 67 Butterfly Court, is charged with multiple felony and misdemeanor counts of violating laws against dog fighting. Pamlico County sheriff's investigator Billy Jewell said Jordan, a longtime Pamlico resident who was not considered a flight risk, went to the sheriff's office Thursday night after he closed his beauty salon in Bayboro.

He is charged with 17 counts of promoting, instigating and conducting dog fights. He faces 31 misdemeanor counts of dog fighting by owning, possessing, and training with the intent that the dogs be used in fighting.

He is charged with an additional 17 misdemeanor counts of restraining dogs in a cruel manner.

Jewell said 17 adult dogs and 14 puppies were confiscated.
