Authorities in Washington County, Va., have charged a Saltville man with five counts of animal cruelty after investigating a complaint of horses being neglected.

According to Sheriff Fred Newman, deputies responding to an anonymous complaint found two stallions, two mares and a colt that had not received proper care at 28651 Poor Valley Road, Saltville. C. A. Worley, 64, of the residence, was charged with five counts of cruelty to animals.

The charge is a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 and no more than 12 months in jail on each of the five counts.

Newman says deputies seized the animals, which were malnourished and in extremely poor condition "with sores and other injuries." The animals were checked by a veterinarian and are currently housed at the livestock market for care.

Worley's arraignment date has been set for July 20 in Washington County General District Court.

Case Updates

Charges have been dropped in the case of a Saltville, Virginia man accused of several counts of animal cruelty. A judge decided Monday that if 64-year-old C. A. Worley agreed to give up ownership of the five horses, then the charges would be dropped. Officials say the horses were found on Worley`s farm last month malnourished and in extremely poor condition with sores and other injuries. Several people have come forward who want the horses and have agreed to pay back the county $2,000 spent to treat and lodge the animals.
