Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Police in Bellingham are investigating bizarre cases of animal abuse and cruelty.

During the last few weeks, someone has been killing squirrels and birds, and then putting on a disturbing display of their carcasses.

Tending to the rose bushes that line the fence of her Bellingham home, Cathryn Fairfield told KING 5 about the disturbing discovery her neighbors made on their fence.

"It was pretty horrifying and shocking for all the neighbors who are close by," she said. "When the woman woke up, she saw some activity out there and found these birds just beating themselves bloody."

One night last week, someone captured two crows and shoved their necks between the pickets of the neighbor's fence. By morning, one was dead, the other still flapped its wings trying to get free.

A few days later and several blocks away, there was another gruesome find. Two squirrels had been tied with a rope, thrown high into the air and left dangling from power lines.

Neighbor Stephanie Tillison worries this is the work of a serial killer in the making.

"That's how they start out is they start out abusing animals and they work their way up from smaller animals to larger animals and then people," she said.

"It'll make me think twice about leaving my dog outside," she added.

Cathryn Fairfield is also keeping a closer eye on her pets.

"We have a fenced-in backyard, but I don't feel safe leaving them there if I'm not here," she said.

Anyone with information in these cases should call Bellingham Police.
