Dog-fighting - 22 dogs discovered
Richland County, SC (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jul 11, 2007
County: Richland

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: James Earl Green

The man Richland County deputies believe is responsible for the dog fighting ring is under arrest.

It might be hard for you to look at them. The humane society nicknamed one of the dogs Snaggletooth, because part of her face has been ripped off.

"These beings are bred, and trained, and drugged and baited simply to kill each other," said Josh Gowan of the Humane Society.

The humane society seized the dogs on July 11 after a tip from the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

They were only able to seize five, because they didn't have enough room for all of them.

"It's very hard for me to say that we're out their trying to prevent cruelty and we've left 16 dogs behind," Gowan told local news.

The humane society also recovered a canine equivalent of a treadmill.

The person authorities say is responsible for all of this is 56-year old James Earl Green. He's charged with one count of dog fighting and is out on bond.

"I don't think a normal individual would participate in dog fighting," said Gowan.

Sadly, Gowan says dog fighting is becoming more and more prevalent.

Dog fighting is a felony in South Carolina. If Green is found guilty, he could get up to five years in prison and be fined up to $5,000.

Gowan with the humane society says this arrest could lead to others in the area.

If you have any information on others who may be involved, or if you see any dogs believed to be involved in fighting rings, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-559-TIPS.
