Police have arrested a 21-year-old Sanilac County man after they said they found dozens of dead and malnourished animals on his property.

Deputies from the Sanilac County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant January 1, 2007 on the man's property in Buel Township, about 20 miles north of Port Huron. They found 33 dead animals and another 45 that were malnourished. The animals included sheep, goats, geese, ducks, pigs, rabbits and dogs, police said in a release. They were found in an open pasture, under a pickup truck topper, in two barns and in doghouses. Police said the animals lacked food and water, and some lacked shelter. Deputies called in a back-hoe and volunteers to help bury the dead animals, while the malnourished animals were rounded up and taken to an undisclosed location for evaluation by veterinarians.

The man was taken into custody, and police said they will also seek charges against a 42-year-old woman interviewed at the property. There has been a fund established to care for the neglected animals.
