Apache Junction police arrested a 21-year-old woman June 27 on suspicion of animal cruelty after they found her dog dead and tied to a pole with no shade or water.

Police spokesman Jay Swart said Kelly Ann Noland told authorities she tied the shepard mix to a pole because the animal had gotten loose before and she believed she had left water.

The woman said she tied the dog up thinking her husband would get home before her.

Swart said officers on the scene reported no water nearby, but a necropsy, which is the animal equivalent of an autopsy, will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Swart said a passerby saw the dog down and called 911.
