A North Gower dad faces animal cruelty charged after beating his daughters pregnant cat to death with a tire iron.

The Ottawa Humane Society charged Frank Carwardine last Wednesday after the his daughter told Ottawa police of the incident.

The daughter told police, during a domestic dispute call, that her father picked up the year old brown tabby and began to strike it many times with a tire iron until it died.

OHS investigators attempted to recover both the cat and weapon on June 7 but were unable. However, Carwardine allegedly admitted to killing the animal.

They returned the next day and exhumed the body of the cat and an examination discovered the cat was pregnant with four kittens.

Carwardine was charged with the offence of killing an animal but, according to the OHS, the charges may be serious but the penalties are not.

Though this case is disturbing in the extreme, unfortunately the penalties wont fit the crime, if the suspect is found guilty, says OHS Executive Director Bruce Roney. We desperately need adequate animal cruelty legislation in this country that will address horrific stories like this and provide justice for animal victims.

If convicted, Carwardine faces a maximum penalty of $2,000, six months in jail and a maximum of two years prohibition from owning or caring for animals.
