Hoarding dozens of animals in two homes
Valley, AL (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jun 22, 2007
County: Clay

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Carolyn Keeton Gunter

Valley police are seeking a woman in connection with reports of animal cruelty.

On June 22 morning, Valley police Detective Frank Montroy, Detective Kirk Cole and Animal Control Officer Melissa Smith responded to complaints related to mistreated animals in the 4900 block of 23rd Boulevard in Valley.

According to the report, neighbors had made complaints to the animal control office that animals on this property were being mistreated and that the rats and smell from the residence were becoming a nuisance.

Smith said she had originally responded to that residence on 23rd Boulevard on June 21. She reported seeing animals without food and water, along with one dead dog. She also said that rats were so large and numerous that officers had to move with caution throughout the property.

In 2006, Carolyn Gunter, the resident there, pled guilty to animal cruelty.

Leaving the residence on 23rd Boulevard, officers then went to a residence in the 3000 block of 55th Street in Valley, also owned by Gunter. There officers found 14 cats locked inside a vacant house. Officers reported that some of the felines were extremely emaciated. Officers were unable to locate Gunter at either location.

Montroy said he will petition the Chambers County District Court to compel Gunter to appear before a judge to face possible contempt of court charges.
