The 44 cats rescued from a Manteca house last week have been euthanized at the city's animal shelter, according to police.
On June 11, officers rescued the emaciated, flea-bitten cats from a house filled with pounds of cat feces when they went to the residence looking for the owner. The owner, Cora Bruno, has since surrendered the cats to the city and is complying with officials' orders to clean up the house, which emitted a strong smell that bothered neighbors.
The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office is examining the case and will determine if Bruno should face animal cruelty charges.
The cats were put up for adoption, but some of them exhibited symptoms of illness and others were at high risk of it, so none were adopted despite interest from rescue groups, said Manteca police spokesman Rex Osborn.
"These were not cats that were going to be adoptable. This is what happens when you're hoarding cats," Osborn said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
