When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.
Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "Peoples Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isnt enough.

Case UpdatesAlbany Man Sentenced to Maximum for Beating Puppy
District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that LASHAWN CARTER, 30, of Albany, NY, was sentenced to one-year in jail by the Honorable Rachel L Kretser. In August, CARTER was found guilty after a jury trial of (1) count of Animal Cruelty, an Unclassified Misdemeanor.
On June 20, 2007, at 11:02 PM in the City of Albany, LASHAWN CARTER cruelly beat (with unjustifiable means) his six-month-old puppy with his closed fist at least ten times.
“This man improperly took his anger out on a defenseless animal and it is my hope the guilty verdict in August and the maximum sentence imposed today sends a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated, and will be aggressively prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Assistant District Attorney George P. Ferro handled the prosecution of this case.

A city man who pummeled his sixth-month old puppy last year faces up to a year behind bars after being convicted of animal cruelty today.
Lashawn Carter, 30, hit the dog "at least 10 times" with a closed first just after 11 p.m. on Delaware Avenue on June 20, 2007, Albany County prosecutors said.
When he was arrested last year, Carter said he "lost it" when the shepherd mix went to the bathroom in his car, according to police.
The animal was later taken to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands for malnutrition and bruising behind the eyes.
Carter was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, which carries up to one year in the Albany County jail.
The most severe cases of animal abuse carry felony charges under Buster's Law, which went into effect in November 1999, inspired by the torture killing of a cat in Schenectady.
Carter's case, decided before City Court Judge Rachel Kretser, was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney George Ferro.
