Kitten burned, cut with scissors, almost drowned
Chickasaw, AL (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jun 17, 2007
County: Mobile

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Ralph Allen Fisk

Case Updates: 4 update(s) available

A six-week old kitten is in critical condition after being burned, cut with scissors, and nearly drowned.

Sergeant Gerald Thornton of the Chickasaw Police Department says this is one of the worst cases of animal abuse he has ever seen.

"The officers discovered several of the pads on the kitten's paws had been cut, the genitals had been burned, and there are some burns around the kitten's face and head," said Thornton.

Ralph "A.J." Fisk, 22, is charged with first degree animal cruelty. The attack happened at the apartment Fisk shared with his fiance' and their five month old son.

Fisk's fiance' discovered the kitten early Sunday morning, bloody and locked in a closet. Her mom called 911.

"I was very upset," said Virgina La Rue. "I couldn't understand how it happened."

Family members say Fisk confessed to torturing the cat, saying he lashed out after the kitten scratched him.

"If he's gonna do something to a little animal that's defenseless what can he do to my grandson," said Lenne LaRue, whose step-daughter is Fisk's fiance'. "I'm scared about that," he said.

LaRue and his wife say they do not want to see Fisk go to jail, but they do want to see him get help.

If convicted, Fisk could face up to ten years in prison.

Case Updates

A judge has ruled that a Chickasaw man who was convicted of torturing a kitten will not have to spend 18 months in prison after all.

Mobile County Circuit Judge James Wood changed the sentence for 24-year-old Ralph Allen Fisk, who will now be required to spend the 18 months reporting to Mobile's Community Corrections Center.

The corrections center typically requires its participants to report daily and undergo a series of intense rehabilitation programs.

Testimony during Fisk's one-day trial before Wood earlier this year showed Fisk got angry at his common-law wife's 4-month old kitten after it scratched him.

Fisk cut all four of the kitten's pads off to the bone, then burned its belly and genitalia. It was found alive in a closet but died shortly afterward.

It took a Mobile jury only 15 minutes today to find Ralph Allen Fisk IV guilty of cruelty to an animal by torture -- cutting the pads off a 4-month-old kitten in June 2007, then burning its stomach and genitalia.

The kitten, named Gizmo, a pet of Fisk's common law wife, died shortly after suffering through the torture, jurors were told during the one-day trial before Circuit Judge James Wood.

Fisk will face a range of punishment between one and 10 years when he is sentenced next month by Wood.

Ralph Fisk was bound over for the grand jury on animal cruelty charges August 8, 2007. It is estimated that the case will be heard by the grand jury in the next few months, but no further court dates have been set at this time.

The charges stem from an incident in June, when Fisk allegedly tortured a six month-old kitten. The kitten ultimately died from it's injuries.

At the time, Sergeant Gerald Thornton of the Chickasaw Police Department said it was one of the worst cases of animal abuse he had ever seen.

"The officers discovered several of the pads on the kitten's paws had been cut, the genitals had been burned, and there were some burns around the kitten's face and head," said Thornton.

Fisk faces felony charges as a result of the incident. If convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison.

The kitten that was tortured at a home in Chickasaw died June 19, 2007 at Rehm Animal Clinic in west Mobile, authorities said. Chickasaw police arrested Ralph Allen Fisk, 22, on June 17, 2007 after, they said, he tortured the kitten that belonged to his girlfriend because it had scratched him. The kitten was set on fire, had the pads sliced off two of its paws and was almost drowned. Police charged Fisk with first-degree cruelty to a dog or cat.

Elizabeth Flott, humane officer with the Mobile Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said today that the charge will remain the same. If convicted of first-degree cruelty to a dog or cat - a Class C felony under Alabama law - Fisk could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Reggie Young said today that there will be a full-scale funeral for the kitten at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mobile Pet Cemetery off Airport Boulevard in west Mobile County. Young, the cemetery's assistant manager, said the kitten will be buried in a small casket that babies are traditionally buried in. A tiny teddy bear will be placed inside the casket, and an ordained minister preacher will speak during the funeral, Young said.
