A Sullivan County couple faces charges of animal cruelty after a disturbing find by Bluff City police.

Bluff city police charged John and Dawn Conte with 4 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and 14 counts of animal cruelty.

The charges come after officers discovered 14 unattended cats in an apartment on Ridgeview Circle. Police say the home did not have water or air conditioning.

The officers also found four dead, decomposing cats inside, as well as cat urine and feces throughout the home.

Sullivan County Animal Control removed the living cats from the apartment.
