On October 5, 1999, neighbors of Luis and Alysia Silva on Duane Street in north Sunnyvale called the police complaining about stray dogs.
Responding officers saw a female pit bull and her four puppies roaming the street, and followed them home.
Officers spotted marijuana plants, and returned to the house with a search warrant.
Two more adult pit bulls were found chained to cement slabs on the property. Officers noted that the dogs were ill cared for and had unhealed injuries.
Nineteen marijuana plants, a treadmill thought to be used for training the dogs, and empty chicken coops were also found. According to police, there were other dogfighting training tools and evidence of cockfighting at the scene.
Luis and Alysia Silva were booked on felony counts of cruelty to animals, possession of animals for fighting, cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale.
Their three children were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Case Updates| According to court records, Luis and Alysia Silva each pled guilty to felony charges of cruelty to animals, drug possession, and child endangerment in Santa Clara County Superior Court on December 16, 1999. They were each sentenced to 4 months in jail and 5 years' probation.
